The University of Sheffield launches their latest High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster
The supercomputer, named Stanage after a famous escarpment in the nearby Peak District National Park, strengthens the HPC solutions offered by the Research and Innovation in IT at the university.
Alces Flight was pleased to attend the launch of the latest supercomputer to join the HPC solutions offered by the University of Sheffield on April 19, 2023 at Firth Hall. Stanage is the newest HPC cluster and adds significant research capabilities to the institution, more than doubling the general availability of CPU and GPU nodes to education and research.
Their launch event focused on the next stages of innovation within the university. Featuring speakers covering wide-ranging topics including wind-turbine blade optimisation, enhancing carbon-capture techniques with probabilistic modelling, and modelling planetary collisions, the event gave a valuable insight into some of the world-leading research performed at the University. In the spirit of cross-university collaboration, Sheffield also invited members of the N8 CIR to join in the kick-off celebrations.
Stanage is built on Dell EMC hardware with primarily Intel Xeon processors, Cornelis Interconnect and Nvidia GPUs with a management service provided by the team at Alces Flight.
